WHAT’S THE REASON FOR WHAT YOU DO?

March 4, 2009

It’s a simple question that I think not a whole lot of people have the answer to.

For me, there are many reasons for what I do; one of them now, being my son. Before I had my son, most of the reasons for what I did was because I wanted to. If I wanted to buy something for my car I did not think twice about it, I just bought it. I use to work about 60 hours a week merchandising, which was physically demanding, but I had nothing else to do, or go home to. I often times helped my family out with what ever they needed, whether it was tiling the bathroom floor or helping tear up concrete in the back yard, just to have something to do.

Then I met my wife, and I wanted to go into a new position at work that required less hours and a better schedule. It took a little while, but eventually the getting up at 5 in the morning stopped, as did working on the weekends. I wanted to be home more often and spend time with my wife, rather than work all the time.

Now I have my son and my wife. Together we have a lot of responsibilities that help motivate me to do things I may not enjoy doing. For example, I do not want to work for someone else anymore. I do not enjoy my work and I hate leaving my family all day long. I will continue to work at my job until my wife’s companies are large enough to bring me on board. Until then I will work very hard and do my job very well, but my reason for working is to be able to spend as much time with my family as possible and to be able to provide what ever it is they need.

The days of me just spending frivolously has come to an end. I no longer just buy things on a whim, such as rims for my car. I always keep in mind what I could be spending my money on and these days everything is for my family and our future.

My mom had a picture of me up at her work when I was a baby, and on the frame she wrote “Kelly’s reason to work.”

I always thought it was cool that she had that up, but it wasn’t until we had Riley that I realized how important it actually was. I could have “Torie’s reason to walk over coals” and I would do it for him. Crazy the power that this little guy has, it truly is like nothing else.
